As the COVID-19 pandemic wore on much longer than expected in 2021, staff at Definity struggled to take advantage of their paid Volunteer Days, especially for group initiatives. But this didn’t stop more than 150 employees from collaborating virtually to help global communities in need.
In celebration of our 150th anniversary, more than 150 employees volunteered online to help first responders make critical, life-saving decisions. Using satellite imagery, staff annotated maps of various remote communities — providing a vital tool for disaster relief efforts.
For many years, our company has partnered with the Canadian Red Cross to provide resources and prepare Canadians for a variety of emergencies. But during times when we are working remotely, the Canadian Red Cross Missing Maps program provides an accessible opportunity for our staff to expand their impact abroad.
For many Definity employees, participating in Missing Maps is a rewarding experience that encourages them to take their volunteering efforts to the next level. “I love how I can work with other employees across the company towards a common goal, and we can use our skills for something positive,” says Denys Elliott, Senior Data Specialist. “It’s also cool that you can see the results of your work in real-time as the previously empty map fills up. Definity makes it easy, so it’s worth taking the leap to sign up for opportunities like this and make a difference!”
In only a few short hours while working from home, staff provided critical details on remote and at-risk populations. Seeing the results of their work and knowing the difference they can make around the world encourages employees to work with Missing Maps every year.
“I learned about Missing Maps in the summer of 2020,” explains Susan Stirrup, Communication Specialist. “I initially thought it was an excellent opportunity for my son to earn volunteer hours online during the pandemic, but I quickly became hooked, myself…I’ve participated in three sessions!”
The charitable momentum continued in 2022. Setting a new standard for #TeamDefinity, staff mapped 14,780 buildings in multiple African countries, including Zambia, Chad, Mauritania, and Democratic Republic of the Congo during six Missing Maps volunteer sessions. After the devastating floods that hit various African communities in April 2022, these detailed maps supported first responders on their missions to find and rescue victims — in this case, an estimated 40,000 missing people.
“It’s incredible that you can make a difference in a remote community, even from your home,” explains Jeannette Cantin, Senior Content Specialist. “I see the need in these distant countries and I’m always in awe of the people there on the ground to help. But that’s not realistic for all of us. I knew I had made an impact — one that could save lives.”
